Classic typing lessons meet keyboard shortcuts training
By Ralph Winden
Have you ever tried explaining how to quickly select and copy a text to a technology challenged person? I have tried this with my mother and she has trouble memorizing the steps and knowing the shortcuts. Sure there are help files and tutorials telling you what keys do what and step by step *textual* instructions... But it's hard for her. Holding down key combinations does not come intuitively to her. The problem: * People want to increase their productivity, but they don't know how to do this on the pc * People don't know (all the) shortcuts for their most used programs * Beginners don't know when and how to apply keyboard shortcuts efficiently Example: You want to copy the text on a blog. Pressing 'control+a' will select the whole page, sidebars and menus included - doesn't work. And clicking with the mouse, selecting and dragging is a hassle. If you go to the start of the text you want selected, you hold down shift and press down the right cursor key, then while holding the shift key, you can press 'End' if you are in a wordprocessor, or you can scroll down using the scrollbar and click just behind the last piece of text. Tada - you have the whole text selected. Then all you need to do is press the familiar control+c and paste it wherever you want it using control+v. But - most people don't know this technique. Especially beginners! Idea: Online typing courses show which buttons have to be pressed. Often you will see a graphic of a digital keyboard with the keys highlighted. This is excellent for beginners. The Solution: Why not do the same for learning keyboard shortcuts? Wouldn't it be great to get tutorials on global shortcut usage in windows and mac? You could use a screencast and apply the same imagery as used in online typinglessons: an extra dynamic graphic showing which keys need to be pressed. I hope somebody picks this up - because the beginners market is huge! |
